Watkins Glenn, New York

Kudos to Nancy and Ron for picking a great place to camp. They picked a KOA just outside of Watkins Glenn. The campground had great facilities and there was a lot of neat stuff to do in the area. Nancy and Ron came up from Virginia, Lynn, Kelsey and Rosie came from Michigan, and Nancy and Bruce came from Pennsylvania to do some camping.

We went through the Corning museum which wasn't a great hit. If you plan on doing it, go early in the day so you can attend the more interesting demonstrations. I was kind of impressed by some of the museum stuff (there was glassware from 1 AD on display) but probably won't do it again.

We also spent one afternoon walking along the gorge in Watkins Glenn State Park. They have a shuttle that will pick you up at one end of the gorge and transport you to the other. One way is uphill, obviously the other way is downhill. We smartly choose to ride the shuttle uphill and walk down the trail vice walking uphill. GOOD MOVE. We were tired enough from going downhill but we could see that everybody that choose the other direction was really beat. After the hike we hit another Watkins Glenn hot spot, the Great Escape Ice Cream Store. Put this place on your list if you get to this area. The ice cream is excellent and you can smell the homemade waffle cones baking as you walk through the door.

The whole troop headed to Treman State Park for an afternoon of swimming. There is a waterfall that drops into a neat little swimming hole that has a challenging little waterfalls walk and a diving board. You can see Ron getting ready to start the walk along the bottom of the falls. Nobody all day made it all the way across but Ron came pretty close (Kelsey and I tried it but only got a few feet before falling off). We had a slight rain delay due to a little thunder in the area so we decided to do a little redneck tailgating in the parking lot. Nancy provided a great lunch but Kelsey was convinced that we were all a bunch of dufusses for sitting in a parking lot instead of at a table in the picnic area.

All in all, it was a great stay here and there is a good chance we'll be back.

  1. Yes, We did all have a GREAT time, abate it being very HOT & us all seeking out as much shade as we could wherever we went. I'm just glad that all the effort in planning the trip worked out as well, cuz ya know when campgrounds hear that the "Teribery Clan" wants some sites, they all just "shutter with delight", ha ha... We all are looking forward to our next gathering, and seeing what other great Bugle Snacks, treats, and massive meals we can partake in...
