Dustin and MJ flew into town on Saturday. We thought it would be fun to rent a pontoon boat on Sunday and see the sights of the Homosassa River. The plan was to watch manatees for awhile then, Dustin, Sheila and I could catch a few fish while MJ just chilled and enjoyed the view. At my favorite fishing hole the wind was so strong we couldn't get the anchor to hold so we went to plan B and we pulled into our backup spot. We carefully scouted the area and picked the perfect spot when I told Dustin to throw the anchor. (Big mistake) After Dustin threw the anchor, I heard "Oops, hey Dad the anchor came untied". Dustin claims the knot holding the anchor to the boat came untied but I'm pretty sure my loyal crew just forgot to tie it off .Of course being a Teribery male he wasn't about to admit to not tieing it but I'm just saying...... Either way, as we drifted along you could clearly see our anchor and twenty-five feet of rope (attached to nothing) laying on the bottom of the river. I was trying to figure which one of us was going to jump in (Dustin was my first choice) when he saved the day by snagging the line with his fishing pole. He re-performed his anchoring maneuver and we were ready to fish. (this time Sheila checked the knot)
Of course Sheila caught the first fish which thoroughly depressed the captain. Then, just to rub our faces in it, she quit fishing (it was too easy for her). For the next couple of hours the fishing was excellent and Dustin and I managed to catch quite a few mangrove snappers. (most were bigger than the one in the picture) When the fish weren't biting there was a steady stream of manatees cruising by. It's always fun to just watch them as they travel the river looking for food. To finish off the day we cruised to a waterfront restaurant, Margrittagrill, and had a great lunch. Dustin and MJ both got into the seafood spirit of things and had soft shell crab sandwiches. All in all it was a very good day on the water.
Lets hope the GIANT Margarita's were consumed after the fishing/anchor incident. And anyone knows it's ALWAYS El Capitain's fault if anything goes wrong, but somehow the shipmates always end up "walking the plank". M.J. must have LOVED that place as she enjoys Mexican food & Margarita's! Hope they are having a wonderful time during their visit.
