Mt. Washington....WOW!!

We took a day trip to Mt Washington in New Hampshire and rode a cog train to the summit. It was spectacular. The train ride took about an hour and we traveled at only about 3 mph. When we left the train station at the base of the mountain the temperature was about 60 degrees. As you can see by the pictures there was definitely snow on the summit and the temperature was 30 degrees (not counting the wind chill, which was brutal). The summit was actually above the clouds (6,288 feet) so one minute you could see forever, then the clouds would move in and you couldn't even see the bottom of the mountain. The view from the top of that mountain was unbelievable. The Mt Washington observatory has recorded the world record wind speed for a land based station at 231 mph. In the visitors station on the summit they show a pretty neat video of two guys trying to eat breakfast during high wind conditions on the mountain. It's impossible.

As an added bonus, the leaves are at their peak color in the mountains so we thoroughly enjoyed the drive to the train station.
