Alabama State Park

We are Roland Cooper State Park near Camden Alabama. Look up the definition of “boondocks” and you will find a picture of this campground. It’s a gorgeous state park out here in the middle of nowhere. The campground sits next to a large reservoir and there are some really neat paths down along the water. Getting here was also a real treat. The last hour or so of the trip was up and down mountainsides with sharp curves about every 200 feet or so. Of course Carmin, my faithful mapping assistant, directed me to take a different route but my wife was absolutely convinced that this was the best way to get here. So who did I listen to? My wife of course (seemed like a good idea at the time) Should have listened to Carmin, she would have gotten us here a little later but with a lot less marital stress. What a painful drive that was but it was worth it as the campground is not very full and the campsites are large with a lot of space between sites. We are thoroughly enjoying the peace and quiet of this place. We plan on spending five days here and then moving on to Mississippi.

With all of the woods around, we gathered some firewood and had our first campfire since Christmas Eve. (The drought in the Crystal River area had everything so dried out that they didn’t allow any fires) There is nothing like the smell of fresh smoke to top off a perfect day of hanging out in the woods.

There are a lot of bass boats running around so I’m guessing the fishing must be decent but we haven’t tried it yet.

There is also a nine hole golf course here that we plan on checking out tomorrow. Have to keep my game sharp to ensure that there is no way Dustin can beat me.
