Round 1
There are a couple of cardinals around the campsite so Sheila thought it would be neat to put up a bird feeder. We carefully selected just the right feeder, filled it with just the right food and hung it from a tree close to the camper. That was the beginning of the battles. It seems the squirrels don't support all that bird feeder stuff. They believe that all food is squirrel food and aren't really open to any other suggestions. The feeder was hung from the tree with a relatively small string and the little bandits figured out pretty quickly that they couldn't climb on the string. They briefly studied the situation, developed their plan of attack and went to work. It only took them about a minute to chew through the string and watch the feeder crash to the ground. From there all they had to do was munch on all the spilled seeds.
Round 2
For round two we upgraded the string to a heavy gauge of wire. You could see the little buggers sitting there staring at the feeder with their little beady eyes, carefully studying the situation. Three or four of them kept circling the tree and examining the wire from every angle. After careful deliberation for about a day they decided the best plan was to just chew through the wire. It worked flawlessly and once again the bird/squirrel feeder came crashing to the ground. We haven't developed the next plan yet but we're not giving up without a fight.
Hmmmmm, I wonder if squirrels taste like chicken.
Actually, squirrel stew is VERY good. Used to hunt the little buggers when we lived in upstate New York (remember S8G?). Would be glad to send you a recipe.
