What a Park

We spent the the day Monday at Acadia National Park and had a ball. The top picture shows a path to Bar Island. The walkway is only present for a couple of hours every day at low tide, the rest of the time it's obviously under water. We just lucked out on our timing and hit low tide so we made the walk out to Bar Island just so we could say we did it.

Then we went to Jordan Pond and had an outstanding lunch outside, overlooking the water. One of their specialties was freshly made and still warm popovers. (they are sort of like cream puffs with no filling) After lunch we hiked around the Pond (approx. 3 miles). The scenery was fantastic but parts of the trail were pretty difficult for Sheila. There were a lot of elevated narrow walkways and paths through boulders that Sheila had a really tough time navigating due to her depth perception problems.

After that we took the drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain. Going up this mountain gives you some of the most spectacular views that you will ever see. It was breath taking to stand at the summit and take in the sights.

We ended up by driving along the coast line in the park (including thunder hole, where that poor family was swept into the ocean a couple of weeks ago). It was amazing how diverse the landscape in the park was. It went from beaches, to inland lakes, to mountains. What a park. If you ever get to this part of the country be sure to stop in and check it out.

A quick driving tip while in Maine. Watch out for bicyclists. They are everywhere, in large groups and in the middle of the road. The old, narrow, and winding roads in this state are truly not meant for both bikes and cars but there are lots of both. Nothing like cresting a winding narrow road with the sun hitting you in the eyes and out of nowhere a bike pops up. It just aint right. I'm not sure how many bikes get hit by cars every year but it has to be a huge number

  1. I can't believe you made it back across that sand bar before the tide came back in. If I was a bettin' man I would have bet a weeks pay that you would not have kept track of the time or the tide and had to spend the night on the island. But then that might be fun, You might have to fight wild animals for food or maybe even a left over pirate or two. Now that would be an adventure ARRRRRG.
